How to calculate the gold to silver ratio

Divide the gold price per troy ounce by the silver price per troy ounce. That is the whole calculation:

Gold-silver ratio = gold price per troy oz ÷ silver price per troy oz

Because both metals are quoted in dollars per troy ounce, the dollars and the ounces cancel out. The answer is a plain number with no unit attached, which is what makes it comparable across decades even as the price level changes.

Worked example, live prices: $4,642.64 ÷ $68.84 = 67.44. So one troy ounce of gold currently trades for about 67.44 troy ounces of silver, and 10 ounces of gold would be worth roughly 674.4 ounces of silver.

Calculating a ratio between different units

Gold and silver share a unit, so their ratio is unambiguous. Most other pairs do not. Crude oil is quoted per barrel, natural gas per MMBtu, copper per pound, corn and wheat per bushel. A ratio across two different units is still perfectly valid — it just has to be read as a rate rather than a count:

  • Gold ÷ WTI crude gives barrels per troy ounce — how much oil an ounce of gold buys.
  • Copper ÷ gold gives troy ounces of gold per pound of copper, which is why that ratio is such a small decimal.
  • Soybeans ÷ corn gives a clean unitless number, because both are quoted per bushel.

The calculator prints the unit basis under every result for exactly this reason. Most ratio pages leave the units implied, which is where the misreadings come from.

What is the gold silver ratio?

The gold silver ratio — often abbreviated GSR — is the number of troy ounces of silver that carry the same market value as one troy ounce of gold. It is the oldest continuously watched ratio in commodities, and for most of recorded history it was not a market price at all but a legal one, fixed by governments running bimetallic currencies.

What makes it useful is that it strips the dollar out of the picture. If gold and silver both rise 10%, the ratio does not move, and in relative terms nothing has happened. Only a divergence between the two registers. That property is why analysts reach for ratios when they want to know which asset is actually outperforming, rather than which chart looks impressive.

Why the ratio moves

  • Monetary versus industrial demand. Central banks hold gold as a reserve asset; none hold silver. Roughly half of silver demand is industrial — solar, electronics, brazing — so silver behaves partly like an industrial metal. Recessions therefore widen the ratio, expansions compress it.
  • Volatility asymmetry. Silver is a much smaller, thinner market and typically moves further than gold in both directions. The ratio usually falls in precious-metal bull markets and rises sharply in selloffs.
  • Mine supply. Around eight ounces of silver are mined for every ounce of gold, and most silver arrives as a by-product of copper, lead and zinc mining — so silver supply responds to base-metal economics, not to the silver price.
  • Storage and bulk. Silver is vastly bulkier per dollar of value. At a ratio of 80, a million dollars of silver takes roughly eighty times the vault space of the same value in gold, which raises the real cost of holding it.
  • Supply shocks in one leg. Most sharp ratio moves are supply events — a mine strike, an export ban, an OPEC decision — that hit one side without touching the other.

What is a good gold silver ratio? The 80/50 rule

There is no single correct level. Since the early 1970s the ratio has spent most of its time between roughly 50:1 and 80:1, averaging somewhere around 60:1. The widely repeated 80/50 rule takes those two edges as action points: as the ratio climbs toward 80, silver is historically cheap, so a ratio switcher rotates gold into silver; as it falls back toward 50, they rotate silver into gold.

Where the 80/50 rule breaks down

It is a heuristic, and it has three real costs that the rule itself ignores:

  • Premiums and spreads. Swapping physical metal means selling at bid and buying at ask, plus a dealer premium on each leg. A round trip can easily cost 5–10% on silver, which is a large fraction of the move the rule is trying to capture.
  • Tax. In many jurisdictions each swap is a disposal and a taxable event, and in some, silver attracts VAT where investment gold does not.
  • It can stay extreme for years. The ratio sat above 80 for most of 2018 through 2020. Someone switching at 80 would have watched it run to 120 before it reverted.

How analysts use ratios like these

  • Relative value. Judging which of two assets is actually outperforming, with the dollar taken out.
  • Mean-reversion trades. Taking a spread position when a ratio moves far from its band, betting on reversion rather than on either leg's direction.
  • Hedge sizing. A processor long one commodity and short another needs the ratio, not the two prices, to size the hedge.
  • Macro signalling. Copper-to-gold as a growth proxy, gold-to-oil as a monetary stress gauge.

Purity matters when you apply a ratio to jewellery: 24 karat = 99.9% gold, 18k = 75%, 14k ≈ 58.3%, 12k = 50%. A 1 oz 18k item contains 0.75 oz of fine gold, so convert the fine content rather than the gross weight.
